CBC Accelerator Awardee Presentations: Progress to Date & Pitch for Year 2 Funding

The Chicago Biomedical Consortium Accelerator Network (CBCAN) meeting was held on Friday, September 13 at a new location, the Discovery Partners Institute, 200 S Wacker.

Michael Flavin, DPI Corporate Relations, kicked off the meeting with a warm welcome to the CBC. Dr. Flavin acknowledged that Discovery Partners Institute, a collaborative research institute, is building upon the collaborations that the CBC has established among the Chicago universities, including Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Next, each audience member provided a self-introduction, an exercise typically included in CBCAN meetings as a way of developing community among our members.

Four recipients of the CBC Accelerator Award presented on their respective programs. Each Principal Investigator delivered a 20-minute presentation summarizing the accomplishments enabled by the first year of CBC funding. The PIs detailed the milestones that had been proposed during the application process and described the achievements that were accomplished and challenges that were encountered. The awardees then pitched their proposed plan for a second year of up to $150K of funding.

Following the presentations, the audience provided verbal and written feedback for the Investigators to consider when submitting their proposal application for Year 2 funding. The DPI venue was ideal for the Q & A portion of the CBCAN session as it offered a classroom setting with individual microphones for the audience members to effectively interact with the presenters.

Accelerator Awardees who presented their progress to date and pitched for Year 2 funding included:

  • Chuan He (UChicago)
A Highly Sensitive and Robust Test for Early Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis
  • Yulia Komarova (UIC)
Development of Novel Treatment for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
  • Arnon Lavie (UIC)
Increasing the in vivo Stability of L-asparaginase through Interactions with HAS
  • Brian Layden (UIC)
Novel FFA3 Antagonist Development for Type 2 Diabetes

Once the live presentations were completed, the audience and presenters enjoyed beautiful views of the city from the DPI Discovery Room during the networking reception, where the community continued the conversation over hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
