The CBC Exploratory Vascular Biology Workshop took place on June 14, 2014 at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center of Northwestern University. The goal of the workshop was to initiate the development of a Chicago-based vascular research consortium that will foster new collaborative research groups. The event was co-organized by Susan E. Quaggin, MD, Director of the Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute and Charles H. Mayo, MD, Professor and Chief of the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at NU Feinberg School of Medicine, Asrar B. Malik, PhD, Schweppe Family Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology, UIC, and James K. Liao, MD, Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Section of Cardiology, UChicago.
Twenty-one faculty members from the three CBC institutions attended the workshop. The participants included 10 junior faculty members who were invited to participate in the workshop and meet potential collaborators. The workshop covered a broad range of topics including vascular permeability and stem cells, angiogenesis and blood flow, inflammation/ atherosclerosis and vascular aging, and innovative technologies and genomics. Each co-organizer gave a 30-minute presentation summarizing the current state and future directions of vascular research. The other attendees gave 15-minute research talks. Ample time was provided for the workshop participants to discuss new collaborations and future funding opportunities.
