The Chicago Biomedical Consortium fosters collaborative efforts among the three CBC Universities: The University of Chicago, University of Illinois Chicago, and Northwestern University. As part of these efforts, the CBC aims to serve as an information center for researchers seeking access to specific facilities and services available in the Chicago area.
With the help of the CBC, investigators can now use core facilities at all three CBC universities at “in house” costs. The CBC universities have signed a pioneering Memorandum of Understanding (Open Access Initiative) that allows researchers from the three schools to access a partner’s core facilities without paying additional F&A charges.
The original agreement went into effect in March 2014 and was based on the results of the 2010 Huron Report. The Huron Report was funded by an award from the CBC and acquired data from key stakeholders who were overwhelmingly supportive of the open access to core facilities at the 3 CBC institutions. The agreement was then amended and extended yearly until 2017. On January 1, 2018, upon the recommendation of the Inter-Institutional Core Advisory Committee, the “Yearly Assessment” clause to assess the impact of the MOU was changed to take place every three years. The current MOU covers the January 1, 2021 – December 31, 2023 time period.
